Connie looked to Maya, then back at Colin, then at Maya again. Her brows furrowed. “Maya, is this some kind of a joke?”

Colin watched the exchange with confusion.

Maya pursed her lips together, then exhaled loudly. There wasn’t much point in denying it anymore. “No, it’s true, Mama.”

She gestured with resignation. “Colin, meet Connie Robinson. Mama, this is Colin.”

Connie pushed past Colin and Maya and strode forcefully into the living room. “Someone had better sit down and tell me what’s going on right now, because I swear to the almighty God above, unless I get some answers immediately I’m going to lose it!”

Colin mouthed silently to Maya, “She didn’t know?”

Maya looked up to the ceiling for divine guidance and shook her head at Colin.

The Chinese food delivery boy picked that inopportune moment to show up. Colin shoved a hundred dollar bill at him saying, “Keep the change.” He grabbed the bag of food and set it aside, following Maya into the living room where her mother was waiting.

Connie watched them both with skepticism over her horn-rimmed glasses. She was had claimed the couch and so Maya and Colin sat together, uncomfortably close, on the loveseat across from her.

“Maya?” Connie said with one eyebrow raised. Her voice held a million questions.

“Um, well— it’s complicated, Mama.”

Connie’s face was stone. “How complicated can it be? Handsome man, attractive woman. I know how the world works, Maya.”

Colin watched the exchange with growing curiosity. He could tell that Maya was deliberately withholding information from her mother, but he couldn’t understand why. Connie clearly didn’t know about the IVF treatments Maya had undergone.

“So— How far along are you? And, more importantly, how long have the two of you known each other? And why haven’t I met this person before?” Connie gestured between them.

Maya looked up at Colin uncomfortably, at a loss for words. She could sense the disapproval radiating from her mother, and it was making her choke. Why, oh why, did her mother have the ability to make her feel like she was 10-years old and caught stealing cookies every time she did something Connie didn’t like.

“Well, um, the truth is that we don’t know—, I mean we haven’t known each other long—,” Maya started to say. She bit her lip.

“Not known each other long?” Connie’s eyes flashed as she leaned forward. “Maya Bernadette Robinson, do you mean to tell me that my grandchild is going to be born as the result of some—,” she made an unpleasant face and gestured between them, “tawdry, anonymous, one-night stand or something? Is that what you’re so obviously trying to avoid telling me?”

“No, mama, it’s more complicated—,”

“Oh, Lord have mercy on me. Lila was always wild— but you, Maya!? You? I expected more from you, I really did.”

“Mama, I’m thirty-three—,” Maya started to say before she was interrupted again.

“Yes. Yes, you are. Which is why I thought you had more sense! I didn’t think you’d have unprotected—relations— with some stranger! A man you haven’t even introduced to your family! I raised you better than this Maya, I really did.
